Staying Active in Fall: Family Fun Edition

October 16, 2016

Autumn is among us!

With the dropping temperatures and shorter days, it can be hard to fight the urge to to stay at home under that cozy blanket and sip your pumpkin spice latte.  But staying active is important all year long no matter the season, so gather the family and get some fresh air with these fun fall activity ideas:

Nature Trails

A walking trail is a great way to get some fresh air, view the fallen leaves and get in a great cardio workout.

Mountain Hiking

You don’t have to be an expert explorer to make it to a mountaintop. Many parks offer a beginner’s hiking paths. This type of exercise can improve cardio-respiratory health and muscular fitness.

League Sports

Sports and fall often go hand and hand. Fall weather is perfect for playing a recreational team sport like flag football, softball and even kickball. Contact your local recreational center for more information on joining or starting a team.

Water Activities

Just because the weather is cooling down doesn’t mean that the water is off limits. Canoeing and kayaking in the fall is a great cardio and upper body workout with a great scenic background.

Corn Maze

Race through a corn maze together! This activity is a great team building exercise that promotes problem solving and memory retention.

Leaf Gathering

Make your yard clean up fun by getting the kids involved. Raking leaves is a great workout but the best part will be jumping in the pile of leaves when you are finished.

Apple Picking/Pumpkin Patch

Visiting a farm or patch in autumn not only helps local farms but can also serve a full day of fun for your family. Beyond picking your favorite pumpkin or apples, many locations offer activities like petting zoos, wagon rides, and playgrounds.

What does your family like to do to stay active in the fall? Do you have any additional ideas?
